There are certain requirements that every coach and launch operator on the water should be aware of and ahere to. It is important to remeber that coaches are responsible for the safety of those in their practices and must therefore be as prepared as possible for any enventuality. There several primary areas that coaches on the river should consider:
1. All launch operators must have a valid safe boating course certificate. This proves that you are aware of basic maritime rules and safety procedures. Courses can be taken through DC Harbor Patrol or online through BoatUS. Links to both groups can be found in the links section of this site. If stopped, D.C. Harbor Patrol will cite you if you can not produce the certification card.
2. Launch operators must have valid and up to date tags, identification numbers, and registrations for the launch you are using. D.C. Harbor Patrol will stop you to check on these things and cite you if you can not produce valid information. This is just like driving a car.
3. All coaches should have valid training in CPR and first aid. This goes without saying.
